Sir: Though it is silly to expect a country like Pakistan to respect animal rights, I still feel pushed to bring to light the plight of animals in Pakistan. Being a poor country, donkeys are used for transporting goods from one place to another. Not realising the strength of the poor animal, it is loaded with a heavy burden. To make the life of the animal further miserable, it is whipped for walking slow. Usually, the driver of the cart sits atop the goods carried. On a number of occasions, I have tried to make people realise by even giving the analogy of a car that could only carry a load allowed by its engine capacity; beyond that even the car collapses. My point has always been drowned out by the justification of poverty that seems to give our countrymen the right to molest anything and anyone. MUNAWAR IRSHAD Lahore
