Prisoner accord and Maqbool Hussain
Sir: It is gratifying that India and Pakistan have exchanged lists of prisoners in accordance with their bilateral agreement. However, both Indians and Pakistanis must not forget sepoy Maqbool Hussain who is in Indian detention for forty plus years. His imprisonment in terrible conditions was an unnecessary ordeal that bought no strategic or tactical benefit to either country. His detention violated multiple treaties that India and Pakistan are signatories to, including the Geneva Convention and the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations. I cannot help but wonder how many more Maqbool Hussains must be out there in both the countries.
