Sir: In Lahore the Christian community protested against the blasphemy case registered against 55 Christians in village number 206, Samandri district, Faisalabad. It began with a dispute over a graveyard. The government of Pakistan had allotted the land for a graveyard to the local Church decades ago. There are more than 400 Christian families living in this village. There was not enough space left in the allotted graveyard, so the locals talked to the authorities concerned regarding this matter, but none of them took any interest in resolving the matter. The locals then talked to the village landlord Chaudhry Muhammad Wasif, and thereupon he gave a suggestion that for the time being the Christians can use space in the old Muslim graveyard which is not being used any more. The community decided to use the vacant land and as they started to dig a grave the local cleric was informed who then reached the place with a mob and attacked the Christians who were present there. The community gathered and told the cleric that Muhammad Wasif had suggested they use the space, which was not being used anyway. The cleric and the locals became furious and tried to attack the landlord as well for allowing such a thing. They filed an application to register a blasphemy case against the Christian community, and the police under the pressure of the mob registered the First Information Report (FIR) number 512/14 under Sections 295-B, 295-C, 506-B, 447, 148 and 149. The police raided and arrested 15 Christians, some fled the area and the rest of the Christian families are living in fear of their lives. The police are making efforts to arrest the others nominated in the case. The group Life for All Pakistan (LFAP) organised a protest in Lahore for the removal of the blasphemy charges. Section 295-C cannot be invoked in this case as it is about defiling the name of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), while this is a matter of land encroachment. The local cleric and the mob pressured the police and misused the blasphemy laws. The charges should be immediately dropped and the arrested released. XAVIER WILLIAM Via Email
