KARACHI: Mayor Karachi has submitted a proposal to Sindh government for construction of 10-storey Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Complex with estimated cost of Rs 1.5 billion. The officials of Local Government Department (LGD) Sindh have informed that the paper in this effect would be submitted to Planning Department of Sindh government for viability and in case of approval the proposal would be sent to Executive Committee of National Economic Council for final decision. Three sites have been proposed by city Mayor, Waseem Akhtar, for the complex in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. In case of positive answer for construction of the building, the old KMC building will be vacated after having served visitors for nearly 170 years, they added. The vacant plot of Milk Plant opposite Civic Centre, Bachat Bazaar ground near Alladin Park and office of district council Karachi near Sui Southern Gas Company have been proposed for building the complex. It is decided that in case of approval of the request, about 34 departments of KMC will function in the new KMC complex. The offices for 27 Council Committee Chairmen have also been proposed in the blue print of the complex. Three-downstairs hallway vehicles parking facility will also be provided to officials and visitors. Restaurant for officials and visitors has also been proposed in the plan. The building of new complex is aimed to provide general public, visiting for their official matters, an easy and traffic hassle free facility. The old KMC building on Muhammad Ali Jinnah Road will be converted into archives of the KMC history besides a library especially for new generation will be built to acquaint them with the old history of KMC. The building experts have estimated cost of new complex at around Rs 1.10 billion but architects and designers have opined that cost on complex will come around Rs 1.5 billion and construction will be completed within five years. However, civil engineers suggested that first two-storey should be constructed in first phase to ensure the shifting of KMC offices there and later remaining 8-storey construction to be completed. Reputed architects and engineers have been invited to draw design of the proposed complex in line with the modern day requirements.
