KARACHI: The Reform Support Unit (RSU) of the Sindh Education and Literacy Department on Saturday organised a Book Day festival. An official said that this was in connection with the International Book Day. A ceremony to this effect was held at Quaid-e-Azam Public School, Darsano Channo Education City, Malir. Sindh Minister for Education Nisar Ahmed Khuhro was the chief guest on the occasion. He said that such events should be organised for students not only in Malir but also in all other parts of Sindh. The Reform Support Unit of the Sindh Education and Literacy Department has taken this initiative to build a platform to improve current education system. World Book Day is celebrated to inculcate in children the reading habits, foster awareness about the benefits of reading books and as to how they can achieve the goals by developing such skills, and a platform where they can demonstrate their talent. “In this way we will be able to train teachers and parents to encourage them to read more, also we will be able to share the techniques/tips to develop these skills,” he added. The World Book Day is celebrated by UNESCO all across the globe on April 23 and RSU had called upon the children of Sindh to pen down their thoughts on books and launched a province-wide essay competition, for which the students have submitted their entries through the Local Support Unit, present in all the 29 districts of Sindh, to RSU. The winners of the essay competition were awarded with different prizes, certificates and shields. Among all district of Sindh, NuasheroFeroze district won five awards. These were given on the basis of best three essays in Sindhi, Urdu and English. The essay competition was announced on March 23. The festival was planned to engage the underprivileged students to encourage them for academic excellence.
