KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has established ‘illegal’ charged parking site outside Sindh Government Hospital Liaquatabad, causing grave inconvenience to visitors. The parking site has been set up by the KMC and a contractor is charging Rs10 for a motorbike and Rs 20 for a car or other vehicle. The patients and families visiting the hospital for emergency requirements or OPDs complained to the hospital administration about the rude behavior of youngsters collecting charged parking fees outside the healthcare. Interestingly, the Sindh Government Hospital Liaquatabad is situated in the premises of District Municipal Corporation (DMC), Karachi Central, but the contractor is receiving charged parking fees on the behalf of DMC South. An official at the hospital told PPI that the parking system might be an attempt to clear space on the hospital premises, but it had become a lucrative source of income for contractors. He said parking was a lucrative money-making business as contractors charged more than what was mentioned on the parking receipt. He said many people had lodged complaints against the ravish behavior of parking fee collectors, but there was not action against them. He said KMC must end the charged parking system at the public hospital and provide free parking to visitors. He said citizens come here for treatment, so such sites should be declared free from all kind of charges. Director Health Services, Karachi, Dr Muhammad Taufiq, while talking to PPI, said a letter had been sent to Director Charged Parking, KMC, to seek their point of view over the establishment charged parking site at Sindh Government Hospital Liaquatabad premises.
