LAHORE: A 22-year-old unemployed youth committed suicide by taking poisonous pills in Shahdara police limits on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as Abbas of Hameed Park, Shahdara. On the day of incident, he locked himself up in a room and ended his life by swallowing poisonous pills. Upon being informed, the family members smashed the door open and found him faint. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead. Police quoted the family of the deceased as saying that he (Abbas) had failed to find a job to earn a square meal for his family. Police handed over the body to the heirs after completing legal formalities. According to reports, at least 31 people, including 15 women, have committed suicide over domestic and financial issues in the provincial metropolis during first quarter of the current year. Psychiatrists say that the suicide rate has become more common in youth than in adults in many countries, including Pakistan. “Suicide rates among youth are increasing due to unemployment, work or study pressure, depression, anxiety and increasing poverty,” they said. They said that suicide and depression were linked to each other, as more than 80 percent of people who commit suicide suffer from depression.
