Sir: No country has suffered so much from terrorism as Pakistan. The loss of more than 60 thousand innocent lives in numerous terrorist activities sheds light on the bitter reality that the country is facing. In order to crush militancy from across the country, government is leaving no stone unturned to fight back the militants. Consequently, around seventy thousands terrorists have been arrested and four hundred and forty one executions took place ever since the launching of National Action Plan (NAP) to counter terrorism. All this highlights the fact that actions taken by the government under NAP are yielding highly positive results as evident from the improvement in law and order situation of the country. The initiatives by the government to ban all objectionable hate material, speeches, gagging fire brand speakers, removal of objectionable wall-chalking, posters and banners all highlight government’s firm resolve to rid the country of extremism, intolerance, and terrorism. Therefore, whatever has been done is appreciable, but a lot more needs to be done. The need of hour is to persistently go after terrorists and proscribed organisations, keep an eye on Afghan and other nationals living in the country, curb sectarianism, watch religious seminaries and mosques and, last but not the least, to remove legal loopholes to award deterrent punishment to terrorists and their supporters. It is hoped that the government will remain sincere in its efforts to fulfil the promise of crushing militants at all costs. SYED ALI QASIM Lahore
