Sir: Thalassemia is known as of the deadliest genetic blood diseases. Bodies of people born with this disease fail to produce normal haemoglobin, which is needed to produce healthy red blood cells. Thalassemia is not contagious and cannot be passed from one individual to another by personal contact. The number of Thalassemia patients has passed 2.5 million in Pakistan and every year approximately 6000 children are falling prey to this deadly disease. The number of registered patients stands at 125,000 only. Moreover, due to the lack of proper health facilities, patients have to face several problems in blood transfusion every month. Although National Health Program (NHP) is providing valuable service to the people for the treatment of fatal disease such as Malaria, AIDS and TB, the non-inclusion of deadly diseases such as Thalassemia shows a lack of knowledge on government’s part. Therefore, I would like to request the government of Pakistan and health authorities to take steps against this epidemic which is taking hundreds of lives each year. SHAKEEL PHULLAN Turbat
