Sir: The measly 0.8 percent of the annual budget that Pakistan spends on health sector is largely insufficient to address its grave prevalence of lethal diseases. This amount stands starkly in comparison to other South Asian countries like India, which spends 1.2 percent; Bangladesh, 1.2 percent; Nepal 1.8 percent and Sri Lanka, 1.3 percent. Health organisations have repeatedly pointed the increasing yet the unchecked incidence of life-threatening diseases such as cancer, hepatitis among others. However, Pakistani administration has yet to implement an effective health policy in this regard. Instead of working on mega projects that only look good on paper, Pakistani authorities should show more concerns towards the well-being of people living under their regime. We need more hospitals and more health staff all across the country. BAKHTAWAR KHAN Karachi
