PESHAWAR: Participants at a training workshop asked the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to delegate power to local bodies in order to prevent children labour and ensure full-fledged enrolment of out of school children. The 3-day training workshop held, “Strengthening Key Peace-Building Stakeholders in Pakistan”, arranged by Individual Land here at a local hotel held on Wednesday. The participants included Tehsil Nazim Nowshera, District and Council Members from Peshawar and Nowshera. Addressing this issue can help mitigate poverty and unemployment, and strengthen the efforts on violent extremism”, said Kifayatullah Masood, Nazim Gulberg Peshawar. Tehsil Nazim, Razaullah mentioned that there was no awareness among the community regarding the use of contaminated water leading to epidemics, spread of diseases like hepatitis, dengue etc, and health issues during pregnancy. He said that, “these issues lead to certain instabilities within the community; there is a need to engage the community on these issues to create awareness within the community”, he added that the role of local government in ensuring the provision of clean water, civil dispensary, and community schooling as well. The youth councillor of Nowshera, Sahib Zada, appreciated the initiative’s aim to strengthen the youth’s capacity in countering violent extremism. He said, “the lack of or unclear knowledge of religion among the youth today is the main driver that attracts them to take up extremist values.” Trainer Rana Mashaud and Anum informed the participants that the focus of the workshop was mainly on the need to prioritize the tackling of issues that could possibly lead to CVE, “educational reforms are much needed in the light of the issue of child labour. This issue could be annexed in the reforms by allocating a portion of budget to present incentives to needy families.” Providing alternatives to deal with child labour, one of the participants mentioned the importance on enhancing the skills of the children along with providing them with basic education. They said Individual Land will be conducting town-hall meetings, bringing all three stakeholders on a single platform to chalk-out a collective way forward to collectively counter violent extremism.
