Summer beauty ritual : Overnight masks — the new beauty go-to for city women

Published on: May 9, 2016 7:19 PM

Anything that claims to save time is hugely attractive, right? This especially holds for those of us living in the time-strapped, multi-tasking generation.

When your lengthy facial routine can be swapped for just a face mask that you apply before you go off to bed, you know it is good news. And that is what has made overnight face masks, the beauty go-to for city women.

Dermatologist Dr Jaishree Sharad says, “Overnight face masks are similar to using creams on your face at night but their ingredients are different from just a night cream. Some women are allergic to the base ingredients of some creams and so, these masks are ideal for them.”

Overnight masks are products that should be used stand-alone and not mixed or combined with night creams or similar products. Dermatologist Dr Apratim Goel says, “These masks are lighter in texture and less messy than night creams.”

Since there are many kinds of masks available, one must choose the one that suits their skin type and condition. There are ones with hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, berry extracts, caffeine, whitening ingredients, tretinoin etc.

Dr Jaishree says, “The ones with hyaluronic acid can be used by anyone and people of all ages. Masks that have tretinoin could cause dryness and so are only meant for acne-prone oily skin.”

Overnight masks should be used only after you have thoroughly cleansed and washed your face. It needs to be applied on the entire face. In the morning it should be rinsed off thoroughly. Mix them with rose water and apply. Some come in gel form and are easy to use.

“One of the main advantages of an overnight mask, especially if you are tired at the end of the day, is that it does the work of a beauty regime for you – all you have to do is sleep,” says Dr Goel. Experts say that the multitasking formula of these masks goes above and beyond just moisturising since they have multiple ingredients that work wonders for your skin.

Dr Sharad adds, “Overnight masks are not as greasy as night creams. They are non-comedogenic and do not clog pores and so they do not cause acne.” The simple convenience of using these masks is what makes these popular.

These masks do have a limited role though and cannot be completely replaced with your overnight serums and creams. These masks are not for collagen remodelling etc. You must not compare these with creams because absorption is much better in creams.
