AO advance principles of fracture management course at Shalamar Medical & Dental College

AO Trauma International has been regularly held in Pakistan from the last 15 years by the effort and contribution of Prof. Dr. M.A. Wajid. Trauma & Orthopaedic department SMDC is quite privilege to host these courses since 2011. In Pakistan this course is exclusively conducted at SMDC with International and National Faculty which are of two types, Basic and Advance, conducted on alternative years. AO Advance Trauma course was started on Thursday 9th Nov 2019 at SMDC under the auspices of AO foundation Switzerland. This was a four day hands-on course which taught the operative care of fractures and high energy injuries. The international and national senior orthopaedic surgeons from all over the country taught in this course. The international faculty participated in this course was from Saudi Arabia and Switzerland.

Dr. M. Saleem, Head of Trauma & Orthopaedic department said, “Such type of events and training programs are integral part of orthopaedic surgeons training to learn new skills and improve the standard of operative care and now after doing this advance course these trainee are eligible for AO Trauma fellowship abroad”.

Course Chairman Dr. M. Usman Sarwar and Course Co-Chairman Dr Sumair said that these courses will improve the operative skills of our surgeons in training.

The participants were orthopaedic trainees and practicing orthopaedic surgeons from all over the country. The course focused on the principles of fracture surgery which were taught by lectures, practicals & discussions. The skills taught on artificial bones under direct supervision of the course faculty. The faculty taught minimal invasive (Key hole ) surgery. This is a developing area in orthopedics with lot of benefits to the patients. In this type of surgery the fractures are fixed through a small hole instead of large incisions as done in traditional approaches. The faculty also taught about the latest implants and how to use them. The course end on Sunday the 12th of November 2019.
