Pakistan’s first female saxophonist recreates ‘Dancing with the stranger’

Published on: June 16, 2019 10:41 PM

Saxophonists Lenny Massey and Leena Habib released their rendition of Sam Smith and Normani’s “Dancing with the stranger”. Lenny Massey is widely recognised for his work with singer Sajjad Ali in ‘Coke Studio’ Season 10 and his recent cover of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s “Wohi Khuda hai”. The song released on Saturday.

Performed alongside Leena Habib, Massey’s cover of the song is a purely instrumental version. When asked why he chose to perform with his student, Massey said, “I often encourage my students to perform and showcase their talent and this cover with Habib makes this cover special.”

Massey has produced the composition of the cover on saxophone at his home studio. When asked about why he chose this particular pop song to cover, Massey said, “As a musician I really appreciate the work of Sam Smith. The reason why I chose this particular song is because it’s a good song and it’s also been doing well on billboard’s chart.”

The saxophonist, whose recent cover of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s kalaam “Wohi Khuda hai” was well received among critics and fans, said that he loves collaborating with fellow artists as it’s not only exciting but also gives a chance to the musicians to showcase their full potential. Massey uses his saxophone for Eastern and Western compositions, a unique choice perhaps which has its fair share of challenges. However, as a musician, Massey thrives on experimenting and out-of-the-box ideas, “as I have always said that my priority is not if the work clicks or not. In fact, it’s all about the quality of the music I am offering to my listeners”, he said.

The musician announced that he will soon release his debut song and more instrumental covers in coming days and expressed his gratitude for an overwhelming response from his fans.

Lenny has been into music since he has eight years old, he has been professionally performing for the past 17 years. The saxophonist has performed with a number of artists in Pakistan and abroad. Eager to contribute as much as he can for the music industry and country with his skill set, Massey holds the honour of performing the national anthem of Pakistan with only his saxophone. An honour that has not yet been done ever in history.

Performed by Massey and Habib, the song’s audio and video are produced by Alex Shahbaz. The song will be available on Massey’s YouTube, Instagram and Facebook.
