Free Zafar Achakzai

Published on: July 2, 2017 10:00 PM

The state has once again depicted its proclivity to silence voices of dissent and criticism. We strongly condemn Zafar Achakzai’s arrest under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act which putatively claims to fight blasphemy and terrorism in cyber space, but is in fact an oppressive tool the government is using to clamp down on those who disagree with the state’s narrative.

We strongly doubt the label ‘anti-state’ and its interpretations by state institutions. We are also cognizant of how this label of ‘anti-Pakistan’ is used to silence Pakistanis who challenge the state’s draconian policies and actions. We must also question the narrative our state has cultivated which claims Pakistan is under threat from all sides, and which aims to prop up artificial unity in our country by silencing the voices of critics such as Zafar Achakzai. Unity in Pakistan will not emerge by silencing those who critique the state’s policies, nor will the state eradicate terrorism by victimising journalists.

It is highly pertinent that one of the first arrests under the PECA occurred in Quetta-the capital of the province which is the most visible manifestation of the state’s neglect. Much like the media blackout over the protests in Parachinar, Zafar Achakzai’s arrest is a deliberate attempt by the state to intimidate criticsin smaller provinces who dare to question the conduct of federal government. Freedom of expression and the right of journalists to operate without hindrance or fear are crucial prerequisites for the healthy functioning of a nation’s civil society. Sadly, our state has become impervious to criticism, which weakens governance and further marginalises minority ethnic groups who are the real victims of an repressive state.

Journalists all over Pakistan must not allow Zafar Achakzai’s arrest or the support the PECA garnered by our Parliament to deter them from carrying out their work. Now is the time to stand united. Now is the time to resist.

The case against Zafar Achakzai should be withdrawn and he should be immediately released.  *
