NEW YORK: More than a 100 people were injured on Wednesday in New York when a commuter train derailed during rush hour in New York City.
According to media reports, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) train derailed from the tracks as it arrived on Wednesday on Brooklyn’s Atlantic Terminal.
According to media reports, the New York’s fire department said that 103 people had reportedly suffered injuries, although these injuries were not life-threatening.
Passengers on the train claimed that they heard a loud bang followed by a jolt that resulted in some people falling down.
The New York Governor Andrew Cuomo told media that the train was travelling at a low speed, however it failed to come to a halt on time and struck a buffer at the station. He added that the impact was strong and resulted in broken windows and creased doors. Andrew said that people sustained injuries while witnesses informed media that some of the injured were taken away by paramedics on stretchers while others were seen holding ice packs to their heads by the side of the tracks.
The exact cause of the accident, why the train failed to come to a stop, has not been ascertained yet. The US Federal Rail Road Administration informed media that they had sent their investigators to the scene.
