Published on: January 25, 2017 11:00 PM

LAHORE: The 12th Cholistan Desert Rally 2017 under the title ‘Race is On’ will start from Feb 9

This was announced during a press briefing given by Adviser to the Punjab Chief Minister on Tourism Rai Haider Ali Khan. He said that three districts of Punjab would also be covered in the rally

The rally is being held under the aegis of Tourism Development Corporation of Punjab (TDCP). Meanwhile, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was also signed between the sponsors and the TDCP at the press briefing.

Cholistan Task Force Chairman Saud Majeed, TDCP Vice Chairman Imran Goraya, tourism secretary, tourism MD and others attended the briefing.

Rai Haider said that arrangements for the rally had been completed in which renowned drivers from across Pakistan would participate. He said women and foreigners might also participate in the rally.

He said that the TDCP had taken the initiative to start the biggest motor sports event under the title Cholistan Desert Rally in the majestic desert of Cholistan in 2005.

He said that purpose of this rally was to promote Southern Punjab as a winter tourist destination and to promote motor sports in Pakistan.

It was a 205km long race last year, however, the organisers have decided to extend the rally route to 450km, spreading over across Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan and Bahawalnagar.

The four-day colourful event will continue until February 12. The tour further features cultural performances by local artists, fireworks, overnight stays in secure desert camps, camel and jeep safari.

The adviser added: The TDCP provides you an excellent platform for unique travel experience to see Cholistan having a rich history and culture along with sensational jeep rally. A large number of tourists are expected to visit Cholistan during the four days of the rally for which arrangement have been finalised.

The desert is about 483km long and 64 to 290km wide whereas out of the total area 16,000 Sq Km is purely desert.

At the end, souvenirs were given to stakeholders.
