Govt yet to fulfil legal formalities for setting up Lakki University

PESHAWAR: The provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) yet to appoint a Project Director for establishment of Lakki University and fulfill other legislative formalities.

The Lakki University which requires project director and other legislation procedures for its regularization and establishment seeking towards provincial government prompt actions but to no positive result.

The University, announced by prime minister, currently functions in a few rooms of the Post Graduate College of Lakki Marwat.

Prime Minister on his visit a few months ago announced series of infrastructural and power projects for KP, including a university in Lakki Marwat, development of the Baran Dam in Bannu, an electricity transmission project for Bannu and reparation of the Indus Highway from Gambilla to Dera Ismail Khan.

The sources said that after premier’s visit the officials of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) visited the university to fulfill its legal formalities.

Currently, the university comprises of two departments including Political Science and Education.

After their visit, the HEC officials sent summary to the provincial government for the appointment of the project director and inspection of land for the site.

However, PTI provincial-led government neither passed a bill from the assembly to approve the university regularization nor appointed the project director to initiate the formation of the university up till now.

Talking to Daily Times Chairman Political Science Department of the Lakki University, Waseemullah Marwat said that inspection team comprising Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mohammad Bakhtiar Khan, Assistant Commissioner (AC) and Aon Haider Gondal along with him and Dr Muhammad Ayaz visited three proposed sites for the varsity.

He said that three options including land adjacent to Government Postgraduate College, land near to Dallokhel Phattak and third site was the land near to Commerce College Tajazai.

Waseemullah said that all of the three sites were selected for the university establishment by the team members and have sent a detailed report to the provincial government for further necessary official action.

It is pertinent to mention here that Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Lakki University and the college to expire on December, 2017.

The officials of the HEC told this scribe that an initial grant Rs100 millions have been approved for the university in terms of salaries and other expenditure.

They said that the provincial government required taking further actions such as to appoint a permanent project director and complete other legislative responsibilities and initiate work on the university.

The university to be established on 1000 kanals land as per the scheme of the HEC which will be one of the biggest education institute for higher studies at the most underdeveloped district of the Pakistan.
