ISLAMABAD: Legal and constitutional experts hold the belief that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is badly tangled up in the Panama leaks and there is no possibility that the court will clear him.
Enough evidence has been brought forth regarding corruption and money laundering by the Sharifs and it is likely that the Supreme Court will form a commission to take the matter to its logical end.
These were the views of the former Supreme Court Bar Association president Barrister Ali Zafar, solicitor Abdul Razaq Khan, and Islamabad Bar Association Joint Secretary Dilawar Khan.
Zafar said the judges are of the view that the apex court has doubts about the Sharifs and believes that there is something the Sharifs are trying to hide; the investigation of the matter is the need of the hour.
“The evidence submitted by the Sharifs in court are full of ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ since they could not satisfy the court regarding the money trail. In my opinion the court simultaneously should investigate the matter itself and constitute a commission to further probe into the matter,” Zafar added.
The Sharifs’ lawyers are claiming that the PM will be cleared in the case, but legal experts find this outcome to be very difficult. The proverbial noose is being tightened around Nawaz and he may not be exempted.
Razaq Khan stated that a lot of evidence regarding corruption and money laundering has surfaced in court – now the entire nation and is looking to the Supreme Court for a strong and just decision.
For Razaq Khan, so far the proceedings tell a story in which the Sharifs are in hot water and it now seems very difficult that the court will give a verdict in favour of Nawaz.
Dilawar Khan believes that if the court favours the Sharifs, then it will be an irreparable loss to the judiciary. The Panama leaks are a test case for the court and it has to maintain the writ of the constitution and law. He affirmed that the court should issue a verdict without any fear and bias – as it did with the Steel Mills case.
