Swedish football star Jimmy Durmaz, who was born in Sweden to Assyrian parents was subjected to racial abuse and threats on social media on Saturday after his tackle earned Germany a free-kick which eventually lead to the winning goal.
The abuse started on social media after when he fouled Timo Werner and gave away crucial free-kick which led to Toni Kroos’s late goal against Sweden which saved former world cup champions Germany from going home in the early stages of the tournament.
The 29-year-old footballer’s Instagram profile was filled with shocking and horrible messages about his family and culture.

However, in response to the abuse Durmaz said that it is nothing he’s bothered about. “I am here proud and representing my country in the world cup. His teammate John Guidetti also supported him and said that it is completely wrong to subject him to hate for the foul,” he said.
John Guidetti should retire after that one. Could've held the ball or crossed it to a wide open teammate, but instead decided to shoot it to give Germany one last attack. His decision making, along with a shocking cameo from Durmaz, have just cost Sweden a spot in the last 16.
