NAB references: Haris back as Nawaz’s lead counsel

Published on: June 19, 2018 11:26 AM

ISLAMABAD: Khawaja Haris on Tuesday resumed as Nawaz Sharif’s lead counsel in National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) supplementary references.

Earlier Haris had recused himself as Nawaz’s counsel, on grounds that he could not work under Supreme Court’s (SC) dictation to end the trials within 30 days.

Accountability court on Tuesday resumed hearing of reference cases filed against Sharif family.

Judge Mohammad Bashir resumed hearing of Avenfield properties, Al-Azizia and Flagship investment supplementary references.

Nawaz Sharif’s former counsel Khawaja Haris appeared before the court, to which Judge Bashir questioned if he was there to withdraw his power of attorney.

To this, Haris responded that he was in court to file a petition, seeking whether the court will be hearing the cases simultaneously or separately.

During the proceedings, accountability Judge dismissed Haris’s power of attorney petition, to which National Accountability Prosecutor Muzaffar Abbas said that the prosecution had not even raised objections and the petition had already been dismissed.

The court has summoned prosecution star witness former head of Panamagate Joint Investigation Team (JIT) Wajid Zia  in Al-Azizia reference case.

The court had earlier asked Maryam Nawaz’s counsel to present final arguments.

However, Nawaz along with Maryam remained absent from the court as Begum Kulsoom’s condition worsened after a cardiac arrest on June 14.

The defense counsel has submitted a 7-day exemption petition requesting the court to grant exemption from court appearances.

Nawaz and Sharif family are under trial in NAB’s supplementary cases for corruption, money laundering and tax evasion.
