GTA 6 console performance debate grows over possible 60 FPS support

Published on: July 24, 2026 5:50 PM

Discussion over Grand Theft Auto VI console performance has intensified after comments from a former Rockstar Games technical director reignited speculation about whether the highly anticipated game will run at 60 frames per second (FPS). The debate gained momentum following the opening of GTA 6 pre-orders in June, with many players questioning whether current-generation consoles can deliver both high frame rates and advanced graphics. Rockstar has scheduled the game’s release for November 19, 2026.

Former Rockstar employee John Ricchio, who worked on Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption, shared his views during an appearance on the Kiwi Talkz podcast. He suggested that players should not expect GTA 6 to achieve a stable 60 FPS on current consoles such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. According to Ricchio, the game’s ambitious visual design could make higher frame rates difficult to maintain consistently.

Ricchio explained that Rockstar is likely to prioritise graphical quality, world detail, and object density over achieving a higher frame rate. He noted that developers often face technical trade-offs between visual realism and performance, especially in large open-world games. As a result, maintaining smooth gameplay at 60 FPS while delivering the game’s expected graphical fidelity may prove challenging on existing console hardware.

Despite the renewed discussion, Rockstar Games has not officially confirmed the game’s frame rate targets or whether separate performance and quality modes will be available. Some fans believe the developer could offer both 30 FPS and 60 FPS options on more powerful consoles, while others expect the studio to focus primarily on delivering the best possible visual experience. Until an official announcement is made, the debate remains based on industry opinions and speculation.

With GTA 6’s launch approaching, interest in the game’s technical performance is expected to grow further among players. Fans continue to eagerly await details about graphics, gameplay, and console optimisation as Rockstar prepares for one of the biggest game releases in recent years. Official confirmation regarding frame rate and performance settings is likely to come closer to release.
