Dutch students develop solar-powered ambulance

Dutch students unveil 'world-first' solar-powered ambulance

Students at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands have developed an innovative solar-powered ambulance designed to improve access to healthcare in remote and underserved communities.

Named Stella Jova, the prototype combines clean energy with essential medical equipment, offering a sustainable solution for delivering emergency healthcare in areas where hospitals and clinics are difficult to reach.

The two-seater ambulance is capable of reaching speeds of up to 120 kilometres per hour and can travel as far as 715 kilometres on a sunny day, thanks to its solar-powered technology. The vehicle has been designed to maximise energy efficiency while maintaining the functionality required for emergency medical services.

Despite its compact size, Stella Jova is equipped with a range of advanced medical facilities. These include an X-ray machine, a defibrillator for cardiac emergencies, an ultrasound device, refrigerated storage for vaccines and medicines, and other essential healthcare equipment. The onboard facilities are intended to help medical teams diagnose and treat patients without requiring immediate access to a hospital.

The student team behind the project plans to take the prototype to Kenya next month for pilot testing. During the trial, the ambulance will be evaluated in remote regions where healthcare infrastructure is limited and long travel distances often delay emergency treatment.

Researchers believe the project could provide a practical and environmentally friendly alternative for delivering medical services in developing countries and disaster-prone regions. By relying on renewable energy, the vehicle also reduces fuel costs and greenhouse gas emissions, making it a more sustainable option than conventional ambulances.

The creators hope the successful testing of Stella Jova will pave the way for wider adoption of solar-powered emergency vehicles around the world. If proven effective, the concept could help bridge healthcare gaps in isolated communities while demonstrating how renewable energy can support life-saving public services.

The project also highlights the growing role of university-led innovation in developing technologies that address real-world humanitarian and environmental challenges.
