US launches $5bn AI research initiative

Published on: July 22, 2026 8:29 PM

The United States will invest $5 billion in artificial intelligence-powered scientific research, the Trump administration announced on Wednesday. The initiative aims to solve major scientific challenges across multiple sectors. It will support research in healthcare, construction, and other critical fields.

According to the White House, federal agencies will use AI to identify causes of chronic diseases. The funding will also accelerate drug discovery and help develop longer-lasting building materials. The programme brings together government resources for scientific innovation.

Fifteen federal agencies will participate in the initiative, including the Departments of Health and Human Services, Energy, Defence, Transportation, and Interior. Moreover, researchers will gain access to the Department of Energy’s supercomputers, AI tools, and specialised datasets. Officials said these resources will strengthen scientific research.

Michael Kratsios, Chief Technology Adviser to President Donald Trump, said the White House is coordinating agencies under a unified AI strategy. Additionally, he said the project would enable scientists to use advanced algorithms to address complex scientific questions. The initiative focuses on expanding AI-driven discovery.

The administration also plans to reform how federal research funding is distributed. According to a White House report, greater support will go directly to individual scientists and AI-based research. The proposal would give the administration increased oversight of research funding.

Meanwhile, federal courts have challenged some previous attempts to reshape research funding. Earlier this year, an appeals court ruled the administration could not reduce National Institutes of Health grants for universities. However, the new AI initiative continues the administration’s broader science agenda.

Therefore, the programme is expected to strengthen AI-driven scientific research across the United States. Microsoft will contribute $40 million in AI computing credits over three years to support the effort. Officials said the initiative will use government data to advance scientific discoveries.
