Enzo Fernandez defends Argentina after World Cup final loss

Published on: July 21, 2026 7:54 PM

Enzo Fernandez has defended Argentina’s performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the team represented the country with pride despite losing the final to Spain. The Chelsea midfielder shared an emotional message after Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time defeat, thanking supporters for their unwavering backing throughout the tournament. His comments came after a campaign that ended in disappointment and was also overshadowed by several controversial incidents.

Fernandez was sent off during the World Cup final after receiving a second yellow card for a late challenge on Spain defender Pau Cubarsi. His dismissal left Argentina with 10 players before Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute to hand Spain the world title. Although Fernandez did not mention the red card directly, he stressed that the team’s commitment and determination deserved recognition beyond the final result.

Argentina’s campaign also attracted attention away from the pitch. FIFA launched an investigation after reports of possible disciplinary breaches during Spain’s post-match celebrations, while Leandro Paredes was accused of throwing punches during the incident. In addition, Argentina’s players turned their backs as Spain collected their medals and lifted the trophy. The squad also faced criticism after displaying a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” following their semifinal victory over England.

In his social media message, Fernandez said success should not be measured only by winning trophies but also by giving everything for the national team. He praised his teammates for consistently competing at the highest level and said it had been a privilege to wear Argentina’s colours with pride, humility, and commitment. The midfielder was also a member of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning squad, making this defeat especially difficult.

Fernandez concluded by thanking Argentina’s supporters for standing behind the team in every match and making the players feel at home wherever they competed. He described representing his country as the greatest honour of his career and promised to continue giving his maximum effort every time he wears the national jersey. His message reflected both disappointment over the final defeat and pride in Argentina’s achievements during another memorable World Cup campaign.
