Hamas announced on Monday that Khalil al-Hayya has been elected as the new head of its political bureau. Hayya previously served as the group’s lead negotiator in indirect ceasefire talks with Israel. He succeeds Yahya al-Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces.
In a statement, Hamas said Hayya was elected to lead the movement’s political bureau. The group described him as a senior figure with extensive experience. His appointment follows months of internal leadership changes after Sinwar’s death.

According to Hamas officials, Hayya won the leadership contest by a large majority. The group said he is expected to formally assume the role next week. Hamas’s political bureau will meet in Istanbul to restructure its leadership bodies.
Meanwhile, the current five-member leadership council led by Mohammed Darwish will be dissolved. Members of the council are expected to submit resignations to Hamas’s Shura Council. The election process was conducted secretly due to security concerns, according to group sources.
Hayya, born in 1960, has played a central role in Hamas’s diplomatic efforts. He has participated in negotiations for ceasefires with Israel and maintained ties with regional actors. Additionally, Hamas’s armed wing, the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, expressed support for his leadership.

The new Hamas chief has been involved with the group since its establishment in 1987. He survived an Israeli assassination attempt in Doha last year, although one of his sons was killed in the strike. He has also lost several family members in previous Israeli attacks.
Hayya’s appointment comes as the Gaza conflict continues and international efforts seek a ceasefire agreement. Meanwhile, Hamas faces significant political and military challenges following the deaths of several senior leaders. His leadership is expected to influence the group’s future direction.
