BCCI dismisses Rohit Sharma retirement reports

Published on: July 18, 2026 6:24 PM

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has dismissed reports claiming Rohit Sharma will retire from one-day internationals after the third ODI against England. The board said no discussions have taken place regarding his retirement. The clarification comes amid growing speculation about the Indian captain’s future.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said reports describing the Lord’s ODI as Rohit’s final international appearance were inaccurate. According to Indian media, Saikia stated that the board has not discussed the batter’s retirement and continues to back him.

Saikia reaffirmed that Rohit remains an important member of India’s ODI squad. He said the experienced opener will continue representing India as long as he remains part of the team’s plans. Moreover, he urged fans and the media to avoid unnecessary speculation during the ongoing series.

Retirement rumours gained momentum after several Indian media outlets reported that selectors were preparing for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup without Rohit. The reports suggested the third ODI at Lord’s could be his final match in the format.

The speculation also followed Rohit’s modest performances in the opening two matches against England. The Indian captain scored 11 runs in the first ODI and 26 in the second. Therefore, questions emerged about his form and long-term future.

However, the BCCI has maintained that its immediate focus remains the ongoing ODI series. Officials have not indicated any change in Rohit’s role within the national team. The board’s statement aims to end uncertainty surrounding the veteran batter’s future.

India will now continue the series against England with Rohit leading the side. Any decisions regarding his international career are expected to be announced officially if and when they are made by the player or the BCCI.
