Pakistan extends airspace ban until August 24

Published on: July 18, 2026 4:19 PM

Pakistan has extended its airspace ban on Indian aircraft until August 24, according to the Pakistan Airports Authority. The decision affects Indian airlines, military aircraft, and leased planes. The continued restriction forces Indian carriers to use longer international routes, increasing operational costs.

According to a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued on Saturday, the restriction will remain effective until 11:59pm Pakistan Standard Time on August 24. The order applies to all Indian-registered aircraft. It also covers planes operated, owned, or leased by Indian airlines and operators, including military flights.

Pakistan first imposed the airspace restrictions after heightened tensions with India following the 2025 Pahalgam attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Since then, authorities have renewed the measure several times. Moreover, the latest extension confirms that the restrictions will continue for another month.

Last month, Pakistan extended the same ban until July 24. According to aviation authorities, the renewed restriction remains part of the existing aviation measures. However, officials have not announced any changes to the scope of the restrictions.

The continued closure has significant operational consequences for Indian airlines. Carriers operating westbound international flights must take longer alternative routes. Therefore, airlines face higher fuel consumption, increased flight times, and additional operating expenses.

Meanwhile, the restriction reflects ongoing tensions between Pakistan and India. Aviation experts note that extended route diversions can affect airline scheduling and operational efficiency. Additionally, higher costs may place further pressure on international flight operations.

The latest NOTAM indicates that the airspace restrictions will remain in force unless revised before August 24. Aviation authorities are expected to issue further notices if the policy changes. Until then, Indian airlines will continue operating through alternative flight paths.
