Atta Tarar criticises India’s award politics

Published on: July 4, 2026 7:02 PM

Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar on Saturday criticised India’s international image-building efforts, claiming its politics of “artificial prestige” raises serious questions. His remarks came in a statement shared on X ahead of an upcoming foreign visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The comments add to the ongoing exchange of political criticism between Pakistan and India.

In his statement, Tarar questioned the timing of newly created honours issued shortly before a foreign visit. He also claimed spelling errors in honorary certificates had caused embarrassment. Furthermore, he argued that one individual becoming the first and only recipient of a particular honour reflected shortcomings in image management.

The information minister alleged that the Indian government has long presented such awards as evidence of international recognition. He claimed these honours were promoted abroad despite what he described as policies based on hatred. However, he did not provide specific evidence to support the allegations made in his statement.

This raises serious questions about the politics of manufactured prestige in India.

Tarar further said Prime Minister Narendra Modi continues attending honorary ceremonies overseas while ordinary Indians face serious domestic challenges. He argued that public concerns within India deserve greater attention than international image-building efforts. His remarks were issued through the social media platform X.

The statement comes amid continued diplomatic tensions between Pakistan and India over regional and political issues. Officials from both countries have frequently exchanged criticism through public statements in recent months. The latest remarks reflect the continuing war of words between the two neighbouring countries.
