Shehbaz Sharif pays tribute to Ayatollah Khamenei, reaffirms support for Iran

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attended the funeral ceremony of Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on Saturday, expressing Pakistan’s deepest condolences and reaffirming solidarity with the Iranian people during what he described as a difficult time for the neighbouring country.

In a statement shared on X, the prime minister said he participated in the funeral prayers and final rites on behalf of the government and people of Pakistan. He conveyed heartfelt sympathies to the Iranian leadership and citizens, stressing that Pakistan stands firmly with Iran as a brotherly neighbouring nation.

Paid my respects and conveyed deepest condolences on behalf of the Government and people of Pakistan, to the Government and brotherly people of Iran at the funeral ceremony of the late Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Shaheed Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei.

Shehbaz Sharif praised Ayatollah Khamenei’s leadership, describing his legacy as one marked by wisdom, strategic vision and a lasting influence on Iran and the wider region. He said future generations would continue to remember the late Iranian leader’s contributions.

The prime minister also highlighted that Pakistan was represented by a high-level delegation at the funeral ceremonies. The delegation included Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Chief of Army Staff Syed Asim Munir, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, federal ministers, members of parliament and senior government officials.

According to the prime minister, the presence of the delegation reflected Pakistan’s commitment to maintaining close and longstanding ties with Iran. He reiterated that the relationship between the two neighbouring countries is rooted in mutual respect, cooperation and shared interests.

Shehbaz Sharif added that Pakistan would continue to strengthen its brotherly relations with Iran and support efforts aimed at regional peace and stability. He emphasised that Islamabad values its historic partnership with Tehran and remains committed to enhancing bilateral cooperation across different sectors while standing by Iran during this period of national mourning.
