The United States has renewed its demand for the immediate release of American citizens detained in Afghanistan, accusing the Taliban administration of continuing what it described as a policy of holding foreign nationals in custody. The remarks were made by a spokesperson for the US State Department, who said the issue remains a key concern in Washington’s Afghanistan policy.

Speaking to Afghanistan International, State Department spokesperson Elizabeth Stickney said all American citizens who are wrongfully detained in Afghanistan should be released without delay. She stated that the protection of US citizens and the safeguarding of American national interests remain among the administration’s highest priorities.
The spokesperson added that counterterrorism efforts continue to play a central role in US policy toward Afghanistan. According to her, Washington remains committed to addressing security concerns while engaging with developments in the region through appropriate diplomatic channels.
Elizabeth Stickney also highlighted concerns over the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan. She said restrictions on education, employment and other fundamental rights remain a matter of serious concern for the United States and urged the Afghan authorities to uphold internationally recognized human rights standards.
When asked about Washington’s broader strategy for Afghanistan, the spokesperson said the US government is actively working on the issue but declined to provide further details regarding ongoing diplomatic efforts or future policy initiatives.
The Taliban administration had not issued an official response to the latest US statements at the time of reporting. Relations between Washington and the Afghan authorities have remained complex since the Taliban returned to power, with issues such as detainees, counterterrorism cooperation and humanitarian concerns continuing to shape international engagement.
