An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Thursday reserved its verdict in the May 9 case relating to the burning of police vehicles in the Mughalpura area after completion of final arguments by defence counsel representing PTI leaders and other accused.
The court is scheduled to announce its judgment on June 20.
The hearing was conducted inside Kot Lakhpat Jail by ATC Administrative Judge Manzer Ali Gill as part of the jail trial proceedings. During the hearing, defence lawyers for former Punjab governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema and former senator Ejaz Chaudhry concluded their final arguments. Counsel for Dr Yasmin Rashid and Shah Mahmood Qureshi also completed their closing submissions.
The court also recorded statements of all accused under the relevant legal provisions before reserving the verdict.
According to the prosecution, statements of all 37 prosecution witnesses have been recorded during the trial. Testimonies of eyewitnesses and other witnesses cited in connection with the alleged May 9 conspiracy were also recorded, while defence counsel completed cross-examination of the witnesses.
Attendance of both jailed and bail-granted accused was marked during the proceedings. Among those in custody are Dr Yasmin Rashid, Omar Sarfraz Cheema, Ejaz Chaudhry and Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed, along with other accused.
The prosecution alleges that PTI leaders incited party workers to participate in the May 9 riots and acts of violence, including the attack on and burning of police vehicles in Mughalpura.
