After winning the toss, New Zealand captain Tom Latham elected to field first, a decision that paid immediate dividends as England’s batting line-up struggled against disciplined seam bowling in helpful conditions.
Jamieson was the standout performer, claiming 5-62 in 14 overs to register the sixth five-wicket haul of his Test career. The towering pacer consistently troubled England’s batsmen with pace, bounce and movement, exposing weaknesses throughout the innings.

England endured a nightmare start, losing early wickets at regular intervals. Debutant Emilio Gay managed just eight runs, while experienced batter Joe Root was dismissed for one. Jamie Smith also fell cheaply, leaving the hosts in deep trouble before lunch.
The only meaningful resistance came from Harry Brook, who scored a fighting 56. Brook survived two dropped catches and struck nine boundaries during an aggressive 64-ball innings. However, with little support from the other end, his efforts were not enough to rescue England from a batting collapse.
Will O’Rourke and Nathan Smith complemented Jamieson brilliantly. O’Rourke removed key batsmen Jacob Bethell and Root, finishing with figures of 2-25, while Smith picked up 3-38, including the wickets of Brook and Shoaib Bashir.
England captain Ben Stokes, playing on his 35th birthday, contributed 12 runs before falling to a superb one-handed catch by Kane Williamson at slip. The dismissal further strengthened New Zealand’s grip on the contest.

England were eventually bowled out in just 39.4 overs, with only five batsmen reaching double figures. A brief last-wicket partnership between Josh Tongue and Bashir delayed the inevitable, but New Zealand’s bowlers remained relentless. The opening Test, which marks the 150th Test match at Lord’s, has begun in ideal fashion for the tourists.
