Political stability key to economic recovery, says PPP’s Marri

Published on: June 1, 2026 2:34 AM

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Central Information Secretary and Member of the National Assembly Shazia Marri has said that political stability is essential for economic improvement in the country, stressing that the government should provide targeted subsidies to protect poor and working-class segments from the effects of inflation. Speaking during discussions on development projects and public welfare initiatives in Sanghar, Ms Marri said the prevailing regional situation and border tensions had compelled the government to make certain difficult decisions. However, she maintained that relief measures for the underprivileged should remain a priority. “The PPP has always believed in politics aimed at public welfare and has never attempted to undermine the country’s system,” she said, adding that economic stability could only be achieved through political stability. Shazia Marri said that despite not being part of the federal government, the PPP continued to offer proposals in the larger public interest as an allied party. She emphasised that subsidies should benefit poor farmers, labourers and the agricultural sector instead of affluent classes in order to minimise the burden of inflation. Referring to the tenure of President Asif Ali Zardari, she said efforts had been made during that period to shield the public from the impact of global economic challenges and rising prices. She urged the current government to provide maximum relief to the people so that the democratic system could be further strengthened. Criticising some political opponents, Ms Marri said the public had become more aware and could clearly see ongoing development work. She added that the younger generation must choose capable leadership for a better future. Highlighting development initiatives in Sanghar, she said a chest pain unit, ambulance service, fire brigade facilities and other essential public services had already been provided, while the NICVD project would soon be completed. She said the elevation of Sanghar Hospital to the status of a district headquarters hospital had resulted in increased funding, adding that further measures were underway to improve healthcare facilities. According to Ms Marri, more than 250 schools had been constructed in her constituency during the last two and a half years, while over 50 reverse osmosis plants had also been installed to improve access to clean drinking water. She said her political mission was to bring prosperity to the people of Sanghar by improving roads, drainage systems, education and healthcare services, and by promoting business activities in the area. Ms Marri also stressed the need for all political parties to work collectively for the public good despite political differences.
