Nation marks 28th Youm-e-Takbeer with pride

Published on: May 28, 2026 11:49 AM

Pakistan is observing the 28th Youm-e-Takbeer today with renewed commitments toward national defence and economic strength. The day marks Pakistan’s nuclear tests conducted on May 28, 1998, in Chaghi, Balochistan. The occasion remains significant for citizens, political leaders, and defence institutions across the country.

The government and national institutions are commemorating the historic achievement through special events, public messages, and media broadcasts. Every year, Pakistan marks Youm-e-Takbeer to remember becoming the world’s seventh nuclear power. Moreover, the country became the first Islamic state possessing nuclear capability after the successful tests. Officials described the occasion as a symbol of sovereignty, resilience, and national unity.

Pakistan conducted nuclear tests in the Ras Koh hills of Chaghi after India carried out five nuclear explosions. The tests were considered a direct response to regional security threats and growing strategic pressure. Consequently, the explosions demonstrated Pakistan’s ability to defend its territorial integrity and national interests. Leaders also stated that the country remains committed to peace despite maintaining strong defence capabilities.

The nuclear programme began under former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, who aimed to strengthen national defence against regional challenges. Despite limited resources, scientists and policymakers continued developing the programme with determination and strategic planning. Later, former Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif authorised the nuclear tests in 1998 despite international pressure. The decision ultimately placed Pakistan among recognised nuclear nations and strengthened its global strategic standing.

Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan received nationwide recognition for his contribution to Pakistan’s nuclear development programme. Former President Ziaul Haq also played a role in advancing the initiative during his tenure. Meanwhile, citizens across the country are observing the day through ceremonies, discussions, and tributes to national heroes. The commemorations will continue throughout the day in different cities and educational institutions.
