Chinese investment project promises major export boost for Pakistan

Published on: May 14, 2026 7:00 PM

A Chinese company is setting up a large-scale manufacturing facility in Pakistan with expected annual exports reaching between $400 million and $500 million. Officials said the project could also create nearly 20,000 jobs, supporting Pakistan’s efforts to expand export-focused industries and attract more foreign investment into the manufacturing sector.

The development came during a meeting between Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan and a Chinese business delegation led by Huwang Weiguo and Karen Chen. The delegation briefed the minister on progress related to the industrial project and discussed future plans for production expansion and export growth in Pakistan.

According to officials, the first phase of the manufacturing facility is being developed under international production standards and is expected to be completed later this year. Huwang Weiguo said the company aimed to establish one of Pakistan’s larger export-oriented industrial operations, with long-term plans focused on increasing manufacturing capacity and global exports.

Furthermore, the delegation highlighted Pakistan’s strategic geographic position and availability of skilled labour as important advantages for industrial investment and export manufacturing. Both sides also discussed industrial facilitation, tariff rationalisation and broader economic cooperation between Pakistan and China to strengthen the country’s industrial and export sectors.

The Chinese investors, however, raised concerns regarding specialised construction materials and manufacturing inputs that are not currently produced locally in Pakistan. They explained that certain imported materials would remain necessary to maintain international production quality, safety standards and operational efficiency for the planned manufacturing facility.

During the meeting, Jam Kamal Khan invited the delegation to formally submit details of products unavailable in domestic markets along with their tariff classifications. He said the government would review the matter under its tariff rationalisation framework to support export-oriented manufacturing projects and encourage further foreign investment in Pakistan’s industrial sector.
