South African officer airlifts crocodile in missing hotel case

Published on: May 8, 2026 7:20 PM

A South African police officer conducted a dramatic aerial operation to recover a large crocodile suspected of killing a missing hotel owner, drawing widespread attention for its unusual and risky nature. Authorities airlifted the 15-foot reptile from a river in an effort to investigate the disappearance of 59-year-old Gabriel Batista.

The operation took place along the Komati River, where Captain Johan Potgieter, a veteran officer with nearly four decades of experience, secured the massive crocodile while hanging from a helicopter rope. Moreover, officials said the animal was believed to have attacked the hotel owner after he was swept away while attempting to cross a flooded bridge.

Before the airlift began, officers had already euthanized the crocodile to ensure safety during the recovery mission. However, the environment remained dangerous as the river was also home to other crocodiles and hippos, increasing risks for the rescue team throughout the operation.

During the mission, video footage showed the officer suspended in the air alongside the crocodile as the helicopter transported them to a secure landing site. Additionally, Captain Potgieter later stated that he believed the crocodile was already dead during the final stages of the operation, reducing the immediate threat to his safety.

Following the recovery, officials carried out a detailed dissection of the crocodile, where they reportedly found human remains inside the animal. These included body parts and personal items linked to the missing hotel owner, confirming fears that he had been attacked by the reptile.

Authorities praised Captain Potgieter’s bravery, with senior officials describing the mission as an extraordinary operation that went far beyond normal duty requirements. Meanwhile, DNA testing continues to formally confirm the remains, as investigators complete their final assessment of the case.
