YouTube tests new app layout for mobile users

YouTube Tests New Video Player UI on Android; Looks Similar to Smart TV App | Beebom

YouTube is testing a new user interface for its mobile app, introducing layout changes to the Home and Subscription feeds aimed at making content discovery faster and more convenient for users.

According to the company, the experimental redesign is currently being rolled out to a limited number of users on both Android and iOS devices worldwide.

The update focuses on repositioning key navigation elements within the app. Under the test layout, YouTube is moving the Subscription feed from its current place in the bottom navigation bar to the top of the screen, allowing users to switch more easily between Home and Subscription feeds through a swipe-based experience.

The company says the adjustment is intended to improve quick access to frequently used sections and simplify navigation for users who regularly browse different types of content.

In a statement, YouTube explained that the redesign is part of broader efforts to enhance content discovery and streamline how users move between feeds.

As part of the testing phase, the platform is also considering relocating other feed categories, including Movies and TV, to create a more centralised browsing experience within the app.

Another change under the new layout involves the Explore menu, which will reportedly appear when users refresh the screen or scroll upward, rather than remaining in its existing fixed position.

The redesign reflects YouTube’s continued experimentation with app usability, especially as short-form video, live content and subscription-based browsing habits continue to evolve.

The company noted that the current rollout is limited and remains part of a testing programme, meaning not all users will immediately see the changes.

Feedback collected during the trial phase will help determine whether the updated interface is introduced more widely to the platform’s global user base.

YouTube frequently tests interface updates with smaller user groups before deciding on a full rollout, allowing the platform to measure engagement, usability and overall user response. No official timeline has been announced for a broader launch of the redesigned mobile layout.
