First hajj flight departs from Islamabad under Road to Makkah initiative

Published on: April 19, 2026 5:06 PM

The first hajj flight of 2026 departed from Islamabad to Madinah on Sunday under the Road to Makkah initiative, carrying 270 pilgrims as operations officially began from the capital. The flight marked the start of Pakistan’s annual hajj travel season, with arrangements designed to facilitate smoother immigration and travel procedures for pilgrims.

A send-off ceremony was held at Islamabad airport, where Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Muhammad Yousaf attended and extended his best wishes to the departing pilgrims. Representatives from Saudi Arabia and Pakistani officials also participated in the event, highlighting strong coordination between both countries for pilgrimage arrangements.

Speaking on the occasion, the minister described the Road to Makkah initiative as a major facilitation project that simplifies travel procedures for pilgrims. He said the departure of the first flight represented a significant and memorable moment for those beginning their sacred journey to the holy cities.

He also expressed gratitude to King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for their continued support in improving services for hajj pilgrims. Authorities stated that around 36,000 pilgrims from Islamabad and 29,800 from Karachi will benefit from the facility this year under the streamlined system.

Furthermore, officials announced that pilgrims will receive free Saudi SIM cards upon arrival, while trained supervisors will assist groups throughout their journey. About 80 percent of Pakistani pilgrims will benefit from the Road to Makkah facility, which aims to reduce delays and improve travel efficiency.

In total, nearly 95,800 pilgrims from Pakistan are expected to use the initiative this year, including 30,000 first-time beneficiaries from Lahore. As a result, authorities believe the program will significantly enhance convenience, coordination, and overall experience for pilgrims performing hajj.
