Democrats criticise Rubio over UFC trip during Pakistan talks

Published on: April 13, 2026 3:29 PM

Democratic members of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee have criticised the administration of Donald Trump, alleging that Secretary of State Marco Rubio left key negotiations related to Iran in Pakistan to attend a UFC event.

According to the lawmakers, Rubio’s reported decision to leave the talks midway has raised concerns about the seriousness and professionalism of US leadership during a critical phase of diplomacy. The negotiations in Pakistan were aimed at addressing tensions involving Iran, with global attention focused on potential outcomes.

In their criticism, Democratic members highlighted the broader implications of the situation, pointing to rising gas prices and increasing geopolitical risks. They argued that thousands of American citizens could be affected by instability, and stressed that such moments require focused and responsible leadership.

“This reflects unserious leadership and an unprofessional approach,” the lawmakers said, expressing concern over the administration’s handling of sensitive international matters. They also shared a video showing President Trump greeting supporters, with Rubio seen alongside him, to underline their claims.

The criticism comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East and ongoing efforts to secure diplomatic solutions. Analysts note that any perception of disengagement during negotiations could undermine confidence among international partners and complicate future talks.

The Trump administration has not yet issued a detailed response to the allegations. However, officials in Washington have previously defended their approach to foreign policy, emphasizing strong measures and strategic priorities in dealing with global conflicts.

Observers say the controversy may fuel political debate in the United States, particularly as lawmakers scrutinise the administration’s conduct in foreign affairs. The incident also highlights the challenges of maintaining diplomatic momentum during periods of heightened geopolitical uncertainty.

The developments add another layer of tension to an already complex diplomatic environment surrounding US-Iran relations and regional stability.
