LAHORE: Maryam Nawaz Sharif has unveiled a major relief package aimed at supporting farmers across Punjab, offering financial assistance and fuel subsidies to ease rising agricultural costs.

In a statement issued on Friday, the chief minister said the initiative is designed to protect farmers’ interests and ensure continued agricultural productivity amid increasing economic pressures. She emphasised that the government is committed to providing timely support to cultivators facing higher input costs due to global fuel price fluctuations.

The surge in international oil prices amid ongoing global crises has led to a significant increase in petrol and diesel costs in Pakistan.

Under the package, farmers owning up to 25 acres of wheat land will receive direct financial aid. The move is intended to prioritise small and medium-scale farmers, ensuring that assistance reaches those most affected by rising expenses.

In addition, the government will provide a diesel subsidy of Rs150 per litre for up to 10 litres per acre. This measure aims to reduce the burden of fuel costs associated with farming activities such as irrigation, ploughing, and harvesting.

Maryam Nawaz noted that international increases in oil prices have significantly impacted the cost of petrol and diesel in Pakistan, creating challenges for the agricultural sector. She said the provincial government is taking proactive steps to mitigate these effects and provide relief to farmers.

The chief minister also highlighted efforts to ensure transparency in the distribution of funds and subsidies. She said she is personally overseeing the process to guarantee that financial assistance is delivered directly to eligible farmers without delays or irregularities.
