The government has raised the levy on high-octane fuel used in luxury cars from 100 rupees to 300 rupees per liter, officials announced from Islamabad. The decision was made during a video conference chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, aiming to target high-end fuel consumption while protecting ordinary motorists.
A government statement clarified that prices of fuel used in regular cars, which serve the lower and middle-income groups, will remain unchanged. Only high-octane fuel for luxury vehicles is affected. The measure is not expected to increase fares for public transport or commercial airlines, ensuring everyday commuters are not impacted.
The Prime Minister’s office emphasized that regular petrol will continue to be sold at existing rates. Officials highlighted that this targeted approach allows the government to raise revenue without burdening the majority of citizens, balancing fiscal responsibility with social equity.
Authorities estimate that the levy increase will save the government approximately 9 billion rupees per month. The savings are intended to provide relief for the general public while discouraging excessive consumption of high-octane fuel in luxury vehicles. The decision to raise the levy on high-octane fuel for luxury cars is expected to strengthen public finances while keeping essential fuel affordable for most Pakistanis.
