Iran rejects de-escalation amid rising tensions

Published on: March 17, 2026 8:58 PM

Mojtaba Khamenei has rejected de-escalation proposals conveyed through intermediaries, according to an Iranian official. The decision signals continued confrontation in the ongoing conflict involving United States and Israel. The stance affects regional stability and civilians across the Middle East facing escalating violence.

A senior official said the supreme leader demanded that the United States and Israel be “brought to their knees.” The remarks came during his first foreign policy session since assuming leadership. However, the official did not clarify whether the leader attended the meeting in person or remotely.

Intermediary countries had reportedly presented proposals aimed at reducing tensions or reaching a ceasefire. These proposals were conveyed to Iran’s foreign ministry but lacked detailed public disclosure. Nevertheless, the leadership rejected them, insisting that it was not the right time for peace negotiations.

The conflict, now in its third week, has resulted in at least 2,000 deaths. It began after joint strikes by the United States and Israel targeted Iranian cities, killing Ali Khamenei. In response, Iran launched missile and drone attacks on Israeli targets and US bases in the region.

Meanwhile, the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed, disrupting global energy supplies. Rising oil prices and inflation fears have increased pressure on the global economy. Officials warn that without diplomatic progress, the conflict could escalate further and deepen regional instability.
