Kim Jong Un observes cruise missile tests with teenage daughter

Published on: March 11, 2026 5:36 PM

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un watched strategic cruise missile tests alongside his teenage daughter, Kim Ju Ae, highlighting the country’s ongoing military advancements. The tests involved missiles launched from the Choe Hyon, a one-year-old naval destroyer, aimed at target islands off North Korea’s west coast. State media emphasized the launches as demonstrations of the navy’s strategic offensive capabilities while familiarizing troops with advanced weaponry.

Images released by the Korean Central News Agency showed Kim and his daughter in a conference room observing the missile firings on a large screen. Although KCNA’s official dispatch did not mention Kim Ju Ae, she has frequently appeared at high-profile events, including military parades and weapons demonstrations since late 2022. South Korean intelligence agencies suggest she could be designated as Kim Jong Un’s heir in the future.

Kim Jong Un stressed the importance of maintaining a “powerful and reliable nuclear war deterrent” during the observation. The missile tests underline North Korea’s focus on enhancing its military readiness, especially in response to perceived threats from US-South Korean military activities. Analysts note that such demonstrations reinforce Pyongyang’s strategic messaging to both domestic and international audiences.

The tests coincided with the launch of the 11-day Freedom Shield drills by the United States and South Korea, which North Korea views as rehearsals for invasion. Kim’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, criticized the exercises, claiming they reflect persistent hostility toward North Korea and warning that Pyongyang will respond decisively to protect its defense capabilities.

These missile launches are part of North Korea’s broader pattern of reacting to regional military drills with weapons demonstrations. By showcasing advanced cruise missile capabilities, the regime seeks to project strength and deterrence while signaling readiness to counter any perceived aggression from neighboring forces. The presence of Kim Ju Ae highlights the possible future continuation of leadership within the Kim family.

Observers say the combined display of military might and familial presence strengthens North Korea’s internal image while sending a clear warning to international opponents. The tests and public appearances reinforce the regime’s narrative of self-reliance and strategic defense, maintaining a high-profile profile amid rising regional tensions.
