LAHORE: The Punjab government has decided to establish specialised anti-drone units in all districts of the province as part of efforts to strengthen surveillance and counter-terrorism capabilities, according to a statement issued by the provincial home department on Friday.

The decision follows approval from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who last week authorised the launch of the initiative. She emphasised the need for a proactive security strategy, stating that authorities should focus on preventing potential threats rather than merely responding after incidents occur.
Under the plan, each district will receive a dedicated anti-drone unit equipped with surveillance drones and an anti-drone defence system. The units will operate under the supervision of the respective district police officers (DPOs).
According to the home department, special drone fleets will be used to conduct aerial surveillance across districts to improve monitoring and enhance public safety.
“The anti-drone system will disable the drones of the enemy and miscreants with the help of jammers,” the statement said, adding that the equipment will be deployed based on the specific needs and security requirements of each district.
Officials said the initiative aims to modernise policing methods and strengthen the province’s capacity to respond to evolving security challenges. The home department also noted that Section 144 remains in force across Punjab as part of broader security measures.
Authorities have already imposed a temporary ban on flying drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the province for 30 days, starting from February 25. The restriction was introduced after reports that Afghan Taliban forces had used rudimentary drones to target various parts of Pakistan.

However, the notification clarified that the ban does not apply to small drones used for indoor activities such as filming inside halls or marquees. Drones operated by intelligence and law enforcement agencies are also exempt from the restriction.
