Iran women’s team faces family concerns amid war during Asian cup

Published on: March 4, 2026 5:39 PM

Iran’s women’s football team is preparing to face host nation Australia at the Gold Coast on Thursday, dealing with immense worry for their families as war rages in their homeland. The team lost their opening Group A match 3-0 against South Korea, and the ongoing conflict has left players emotionally strained while trying to focus on the competition.

Coach Marziyeh Jafari highlighted the team’s deep concern for loved ones back home, noting that an internet blackout has left players and staff fully disconnected, making it nearly impossible to contact anyone in Iran. Despite this, the coach expressed gratitude for the support from the Iranian-Australian community in Australia, which has helped boost their morale.

Striker Sara Didar, 21, shared the emotional toll the situation has had on the players, fighting back tears while speaking about the safety and well-being of their families, friends, and fellow citizens affected by the strikes. She emphasized the difficulty of balancing professional focus with personal worry amid a national crisis.

Asian football authorities have offered “full support and assistance” to the Iranian team, ensuring they receive guidance and help while competing in Australia. The players arrived just days before US-Israel strikes killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, adding to the uncertainty and tension surrounding their participation.

Iran’s women’s national team made a historic debut at the 2022 Asian Cup in India, gaining national recognition in a country where women’s rights face severe restrictions. Their continued presence in the tournament demonstrates resilience and professionalism under extraordinary stress.

Jafari stressed that while the team is committed to performing professionally, their hearts remain with families and citizens back home. She urged empathy from the international football community while acknowledging the courage and determination of her players.
