Trump announces plan to send hospital ship toward Greenland

Published on: February 22, 2026 1:23 PM

Donald Trump announced that he plans to send a hospital ship to Greenland while coordinating with Jeff Landry. He shared the statement on social media shortly before hosting a dinner for Republican governors at the White House. During the event, he sat beside Landry and discussed the initiative. The announcement immediately drew attention due to its timing and diplomatic context.

Trump said the mission would deliver medical support to people in Greenland who need care. He described the vessel as a “great hospital boat” and claimed it would assist those lacking proper treatment. However, officials from the White House and the governor’s office did not confirm details of the plan. They also did not clarify whether any formal request had come from Denmark or Greenland.

Greenland is an autonomous territory within Denmark, and Trump has previously expressed interest in acquiring the island. His comments have generated diplomatic debate and strong reactions from regional leaders. Recently, discussions took place among Greenland, Denmark, and the United States to address tensions linked to these statements. These talks aimed to reduce uncertainty within the broader NATO framework.

Meanwhile, Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command recently reported that it evacuated a crew member requiring urgent medical treatment from a U.S. submarine operating near Greenland’s waters. The evacuation occurred several nautical miles outside the capital city of Nuuk. Officials did not confirm whether Trump’s announcement related to this incident. Therefore, the connection between the medical evacuation and the proposed ship remains unclear.

The United States Navy currently operates two hospital ships, known as the Mercy and the Comfort, although neither is stationed in Louisiana. Authorities did not state which vessel would be used for the Greenland mission. Additionally, the Department of War did not issue an immediate response regarding deployment plans. As a result, questions continue about logistics, coordination, and the official purpose of the proposed operation.
