Opposition hopes for family visit with Imran Khan as sit-in enters fifth day

Minister says Imran to be shifted to hospital amid opposition sit-in at Parliament House - Pakistan - DAWN.COM
ISLAMABAD: The sit-in by the TTAP entered its fifth day on Tuesday as blocked routes to Parliament House were cleared, with the opposition expressing hope that at least one family member of incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan or a party leader would be allowed to meet him.

The protest, which began on Friday, had been scheduled to end on Tuesday but was extended to press the government on access to the former premier. Concerns over Imran Khan’s health, highlighted by a medical report following his examination at Adiala Jail on Sunday, have intensified the demonstrations.

TTAP spokesperson Akhunzada Hussain Ahmed Yousafzai told that two sit-in participants, Salman Akram Raja and Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, would be going to the jail as their names were on the approved list of visitors. He added that the hope was for at least one family member to meet Khan, which could help dispel rumors regarding his condition.

The spokesperson emphasized that allowing the meeting could ease tensions, noting that trust had diminished over the past two years due to repeated misinformation. Following the visit, Imran Khan’s sisters are expected to hold a press conference to update the public on his health.

Meanwhile, protests continued across the capital. PTI parliamentarians led a demonstration outside the Parliament Lodges, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi led a separate sit-in at KP House, calling for medical treatment under the supervision of Imran Khan’s personal physicians and in the presence of his family.

Afridi underscored that as a former prime minister and political leader, Imran Khan’s health concerns “are beyond politics” and must be addressed accordingly, warning that barring his family and doctors from access was increasing public apprehension.
