Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced on Sunday that Basant festivities in Lahore can continue until 5am Monday, extending celebrations after witnessing vibrant participation, unity, and disciplined enjoyment across the city. The decision came after the festival’s final approved day, as authorities noted strong public cooperation with safety rules and overall festive enthusiasm.
Earlier, the Punjab government had allowed Basant celebrations in Lahore for three days from February 6 to 8, keeping the event limited and closely monitored as a special pilot initiative. However, the chief minister said the extension rewards citizens for celebrating responsibly while following safety guidelines and respecting public order.

Maryam Nawaz urged people to remain careful, advising them to avoid electric wires, properly secure rooftops, and strictly follow all issued standard operating procedures to prevent accidents. She emphasized that collective responsibility can help make this revived Basant joyful, safe, and memorable for families across Lahore.
Basant had remained banned since 2007 due to fatal accidents caused by sharp kite strings and dangerous practices like celebratory gunfire, which claimed several lives, especially motorcyclists. After 18 years, the Punjab government lifted the ban with strict controls, limiting festivities to Lahore to test safety arrangements.

Despite these measures, authorities reported 118 Basant-related accidents during the first two days, including six deaths caused by falls and risky attempts to catch kites. Officials confirmed that only cotton string is allowed, while metallic strings, oversized kites, and sensitive images remain strictly banned.
