SAN FRANCISCO: YouTube has unveiled a major update to its auto-dubbing feature, now available in 27 languages, aimed at breaking down language barriers and making global content more accessible. The platform says the update is designed to help “global stories feel local” while giving both creators and viewers greater control over how videos are experienced.

The enhanced feature now uses Expressive Speech in eight major languages, including English, Spanish, and French. This upgrade improves the realism of dubbed audio, preserving the original tone, emotion, and energy of creators’ content, addressing a long-standing criticism of robotic-sounding translations.

In addition, viewers can now select a “Preferred Language” to decide whether they want to watch videos in the original language or in a dubbed version. Previously, YouTube used watch history to select a default language automatically. This new setting gives multilingual users more control over their experience.
YouTube is also testing a lip-sync pilot, which aligns a speaker’s mouth movements with the translated audio. While still experimental, the feature aims to eliminate the visual mismatch often seen in dubbed videos.
For creators, YouTube has introduced safeguards to protect their content. Smart filtering now prevents unsuitable videos, such as silent vlogs or music-only uploads, from being auto-dubbed. Creators can also upload custom dubs, disable auto-dubbing entirely, or control how their videos appear in different languages. YouTube emphasizes that these updates will not affect the discoverability of content.

The popularity of auto-dubbing is evident, with over 6 million daily viewers spending at least 10 minutes on dubbed videos in December 2025. YouTube’s latest enhancements underscore its commitment to inclusive, global storytelling, ensuring content reaches a wider audience while maintaining quality and authenticity.
